As I received each new version I filed numerous new reports.
I filed reports for every single bug that I could find. After the article was published I heard from one of the founders of the company asked to be a beta tester for their forthcoming new version. One of the programs was by a UK company - AM Technology - called Vicom. I can't remember all of their names, however, as I mentioned above there were plenty to choose from. The longest article I wrote was a comparison of thirteen different terminal emulation & file transfer programs. I hung out a lot on the MacTel BBS and contributed to their printed magazine "Clipboard".

Terminal emulation software was used, with plenty of alternatives on the Mac such as Red Ryder or MacTerminal to connect to a BBS, interact plus upload / download files using the Kermit, X, Y or Z-Modem file transfer protocols. I had already programmed the Apple Lisa, Xero Star and Sun Workstations (amongst others), however it was the Macintosh that I was most interested in, that and Unix, C, Usenet, communications and conferencing systems.īack in this era - and it really does seem so last century - you used modems to dial-up a server at 2400 bps (if you were lucky) and converse online in text only mode, while paying by the minute. During my time at the AI Lab I became deeply involved in the world of these new consumer WIMP based machines, that is Macintoshes.
